Blogging for Money Vs. Blogging for Fun
By smanty
Blogging is a way for me to express new ideas, random thoughts that I do not want to keep inside, and other ideas through writing. I blog mostly for fun, but on some of my blogs, I will post Google ads or refer people to my work online. There are no problems with the desire to build a blog for fun, but when building a blog for money, you may run into some problems.
Blogging for Fun
When you are blogging to blog, it is normally much more enjoyable. I find it for fun too. Personally, when I blog, I like to talk about more selfless things. I like to write "how to" blogs and helpful articles. Blogs that do not intend to bring in money are, a lot of times, much more sporadic, where every post is about a different topic. It is rare to see a blog with no ads strictly kept to one topic. I have a very sporadic blog that ranges from topics of ski racing to new phones to making money online. I speak my mind in my blog and the lengths of my posts are, normally, anywhere from 30 to 400 words in length. It is a very casual place for me to post my thoughts.
When talking about something online, people tend to be much more open about their opinions and are much more willing to share what they are thinking. When people post thoughts or opinions online, they do so, mainly, with the thought that there will be no future punishments or penalties for what they have said. When speaking their thoughts or opinions out in the public, with your own voice, you are more aware of possible future penalties for saying such things, because your audience of these thoughts is much more local to you. Many people blog for the freedom to speak their opinions.
Blogging for Money
When blogging for the purpose of bringing in money, you will normally have trouble finding something to write about that you are passionate about. If you are blogging for money, you should begin blogging without ads on your site, until you generate a decent audience. When blogging for money, you should state a blogging topic, and stick to that topic. Blogs that stick to specific topics tend to bring in much more traffic, due to how traffic engines see your site. When you have picked a topic, you should then expand on that topic. Do not post multiple posts a day, let alone one a day. Spread your posts out and keep them in good condition. A good condition post will normally be around 500 words or more, will have a point or multiple points, will not be boring to read, will have the feeling that, when someone is reading the post, they feel casual and engaged, but not too casual, will be grammatically correct, and does not draw out a point. If you do this, your blog will most likely rise above others.
If all of your posts have the qualities of a good condition post, then you should be able to bring in a decent sized audience. When you have a regular source of traffic, do not be afraid to post one or two ads on the side of your blog. If you place too many, your blog will not look appealing, and people will be drawn away from your site, for the sole reason that it was too crowded. You will begin to see the money crawling in, and when your traffic grows, you can easily make a good $1000 a month.
I know this last statement makes it sound as though making money with a blog is easy, but to be honest it is not. It takes a lot of hard work. A lot of what you have to do is write, which can take up about an hour a day, but when you have a good number of posts on your site, you may also want to begin spreading the word about your blog. Post the link to your blog on relevant forums, articles, and questions, and your blog will be picked up from search engines much more frequently. It is not easy to build an audience, but it is much easier to keep an existing audience.
